CORAL GABLES - Jim Larranaga, who led the University of Miami's men's basketball team to its first Final Four in the school history in 2023, has stepped down as head coach, the Associated Press and CBS Miami's news partner The Miami Herald reported Thursday.

Larranaga is the winningest coach in program history and in the midst of his 14th season coaching Miami, where he has accrued a 274-174 overall record. His head-coaching resume dates back to the 1980s where he first became head coach at Bowling Green.

Jim Larranaga stepped down as coach of the Miami Hurricanes, effective immediately, on Thursday. "After more than fifty years in college coaching, it is simply time," Larranaga, 75, said. "There is never a great moment to step away,

Larrañaga was at the helm at George Mason when the Patriots made one of the most improbable Final Four runs in modern college basketball history in 2006. George Mason beat three top-seven seeds before taking down No. 1 Connecticut in the Elite Eight. The Patriots lost 73-58 to eventual national champion Florida in the national semifinals.
