A new mission designed to better understand the heliosphere will be the first to map in three dimensions how the solar corona becomes the solar wind.

The U.S. space agency is tentatively scheduled to launch two missions on Sunday: one to study the sun, the other to examine “how the universe evolved and search for key ingredients for life in our galaxy.

The Earth is immersed in material streaming from the sun. This stream, called the solar wind, is washing over our planet, causing breathtaking auroras, impacting satellites and astronauts in space, and even affecting ground-based infrastructure.
