As the line keeps blurring between major college football and the NFL, and de facto free agency (the NCAA transfer portal) persists at the collegiate level, spring games — if not spring practices — have joined walk-ons and wing-T formations on the sport’s endangered list.

AUSTIN — Texas announced Thursday that it will not hold a spring football game for the first time in head coach Steve Sarkisian’s four-year Longhorn tenure. Sarkisian made the announcement on a football podcast and cited the wear and tear of two consecutive long seasons as the reason for the cancellation.

Texas will join a growing list of college football programs doing away with traditional spring games in favor of a slightly restructured practice slate, coach Steve Sarkisian said during a recent appearance on the "Up & Adams Show.
