Paetongtarn said the call was made from her personal phone and she did not know the conversation would be recorded and made public.

Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Thursday that it will hand a letter of protest to Cambodia's government after a call between the two countries was allegedly leaked by a high-profile Cambodian official.

The Shinawatra and Hun families share a long-standing political relationship. Paetongtarn’s father, Thaksin Shinawatra, and Hun Sen refer to each other as “godbrothers.”

Bhumjaithai, the second-largest party in her ruling coalition, quit the alliance on Wednesday after the leaked phone call, dealing a major blow to her Pheu Thai party's position in parliament. The coalition now holds a slim parliamentary majority - which will be lost if more of its partners decide to leave.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra has been widely criticized for appearing weak in a conversation with Cambodia’s Hun Sen, who released a recording of their exchange.
