A Republican effort to block US states from enforcing new artificial intelligence regulations will remain in President Donald Trump’s massive tax and spending package for now, marking a win for tech companies pushing to stall and override dozens of AI safety laws across the country.

Donald Trump ‘s signature piece of legislation, the One Beautiful Bill Act, will be able to retain a provision that prohibits states from regulating artificial intelligence over the next 10 years. Under the current language in the bill, states would lose out on federal broadband funding if they enforce such laws.

According to Senate Budget Committee Democrats, the Senate parliamentarian said that the AI moratorium complies with the special budgetary rules Republicans are using to advance the bill. If passed, the measure would bar states from enforcing new AI regulations for a decade and would penalize those that do by withholding federal broadband funding.
