On Saturday night Michel Barnier, the French prime minister, unveiled his new centre-Right cabinet, awarding plum posts such as interior and finance ministers to mainstream conservatives and Macron allies, provoking anger from the opposition and threats to topple the government.

The new cabinet pulls in allies from the centre and right, despite left-wing parties winning France's election.

The team put together by the new prime minister combines Macron loyalists with a dozen elected representatives from the most conservative right. It's a far cry from the social-democratic roots of Emmanuel Macron's early supporters.
