Accused Minnesota assassin Vance Boelter's alleged plan to kill more politicians on his target list was foiled by a police sergeant's proactive hunch, and his capture came after he made a big misstep that exposed his whereabouts to an eagle-eyed neighbor, authorities said.

Vance Boelter, accused of shooting two Minnesota state lawmakers, texted his family shortly after, according to an FBI affidavit.

St. Cloud State graduate Vance Boelter appeared in federal court Monday afternoon. He is assigned a public defender, citing financial woes.

The suspect built a scattered career ranging from food to retailing to private security to pastoring, public records and his online postings show.

He wounded Sen. John Hoffman and his wife but didn’t come into contact with the two other DFL legislators, investigators say.

The judge presiding over the upcoming burglary trial of state Sen. Nicole Mitchell is postponing the trial given the slaying of Rep. Melissa Hortman, who was fatally shot along with her husband in their home Saturday morning.
