D. Wayne Lukas, a Hall of Fame horse trainer who won 15 Triple Crown races and a record 20 Breeders’ Cup events, fusing business savvy and good horsemanship while running a coast-to-coast operation that made him one of the sport’s biggest stars on two legs,

"Wayne Lukas reinvented the game," Lanny Kohnhorst, the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association's Director of Horsemen's Relations. "Wayne produced champions, from Grade 1 winners to stallion prospects to next generation of trainers, and defined American Thoroughbred racing."

D. Wayne Lukas, the Hall of Famer who became one of the most accomplished horse trainers with seven Preakness, four Kentucky Derby and four Belmont Stakes wins, has died. He was 89.
