Use Macrium Reflect to make a disk image on an external drive. Use same to make a bootable copy that allows you to copy the disk image to the new SSD. I just did it, refreshingly easy.

I see Macrium going the Acronis free trial route after they took down their free version. Also if you're hell bent on free at some point maybe clonezilla will be the only choice.
