The FTC alleges that LA Fitness' parent company is using "opaque and complicated" methods to make it difficult for customers to cancel memberships.

The Federal Trade Commission is suing the operators of LA Fitness, over allegations that they make it "exceedingly difficult" for consumers to cancel gym memberships and other related services offered in their clubs nationwide.

The lawsuit also comes against the backdrop of the FTC’s Click-to-Cancel rule, finalized in October 2024 but shot down in federal court in July. The rule would have required sellers to make canceling a subscription as easy as signing up, responding to thousands of consumer complaints about recurring charges and convoluted cancellation systems.
