Coronation Street has been a part of the nation's TV viewing for over 60 years - but the ITV soap was almost given a different name, according to one of its biggest stars

Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver will leave the soap after 25 years in the role of Eileen Grimshaw, explaining that she wants to "embrace change". The actor debuted as Eileen back in 2000, but it has been confirmed to Digital Spy that she has now decided to leave the ITV soap, with her final scenes set to air in the late spring.

Actress Sue Cleaver will leave Coronation Street after 25 years, but is keeping the “door open” to make a return to the soap. The star, 61, has played the outspoken and uncomplicated Eileen Grimshaw in the ITV show since 2000.

Former Coronation Street star Catherine Tyldesley has been approached to return to the cobbles "a couple of times" since she left in 2018.

I’ve had 25 privileged years of working on Coronation Street ,” Cleaver said. “The door is still firmly open but as I reached my 60th year, I decided it was time to embrace change, look for new adventures and live fearlessly.
