Hurricane Erick struck Mexico’s Pacific coast as a fierce Category 3 storm, tearing through Oaxaca with powerful winds and flooding. Streets in Puerto Escondido were submerged, boats destroyed, and power lines knocked out.
Hurricane Erin, now a Category 2 storm, has triggered a state of emergency in North Carolina, where residents and visitors along the Outer Banks are under evacuation orders. The Outer Banks is also under a tropical storm warning; Erin is forecast to hit the islands with heavy rain and rough winds on Wednesday night.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Erick came onshore in the southern Mexico state of Oaxaca near Santiago Pinotepa Nacional around 5:30 a.m. CST as a powerful storm with peak winds of 125 mph.
The National Hurricane Center warned that roads in the low-lying barrier islands may become impassable, with waves as high as 20 feet crashing ashore. The heavy surf is likely to result in significant beach erosion, it said in its 8 a.m. EDT update.
