Overall command and responsibility for the Kahikinui brush fire has transferred to the State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife.
The Kahikinui was initially estimated at 500 acres (202 hectares), but aerial surveys overnight put the estimate at about 330 acres (134 hectares), Maui’s fire department said.
The Kahikinui brush fire comes less than two years after a devastating wildfire in Lahaina – also in Maui – that killed over 100 people.
A fast-moving Hawaii brush fire fueled by fierce winds forced about 50 residents to evacuate. The fire is 85% contained and no structures have burned.
