House Republicans have unveiled a proposal to slash funding for the nation’s largest anti-hunger program by an estimated $290 billion as part of their sweeping plan to turn President Trump’s agenda into a legislative reality.

The House Ag Committee is tasked with reducing the budget of the new farm bill. Part of their proposal is to cut food assistance program funding and invest in agriculture.

Republicans are looking to cut nearly $300 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — formerly known as food stamps — in part by requiring states to share the costs of paying out benefits.
