A decade after the last state-sanctioned hunt had to be cut short because so many bears were killed, Florida says it’s time for another one.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commissioners voted 4-1 May 21 to have a black bear hunt for 23 days in December, but the measure must be voted on again in August to be finalized.

The FWC is a step closer to approving a bear hunt in Florida, but activist groups hope they will have a last-minute change of heart.
