Idaho reported the state’s third measles case in the last two weeks, after not reporting any infections this year during a national surge. Health officials say they don’t know of a link between the new measles case in Bonner County reported Wednesday and a separate case reported last week in Kootenai County,
Washington has seen 10 confirmed cases of measles so far in 2025, according to the state Department of Health, or DOH. The cases have all been on the west side, including six in King County and two each in Whatcom and Snohomish counties. The Whatcom County cases involved two family members in the same household.
Idaho’s three measles cases are all in unvaccinated children. Vaccination is the best way to prevent measles, which is highly contagious and usually leads to hospitalization for one in five children younger than 5 years old who are infected.
New data is set to be released Wednesday from the CDC on the spread of measles in the U.S. As of last week, there were 1,333 cases in the U.S. for the year in 39 states. That’s the highest the numbers have been in more than three decades.
For instance, although measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, just this year there have been 1,356 confirmed cases and 32 outbreaks across 41 states -- including South Carolina.
The West Virginia Department of Health put out an alert Tuesday warning that some West Virginia residents may have been exposed to measles.
