A stay has been granted by the Federal Court of Appeal on the cull order for 400 ostriches at Universal Ostrich Farms (UOF) near Edgewood.

Universal Ostrich Farm “failed to undertake appropriate biosecurity risk mitigation measures,” the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said in a statement.

In January, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) ordered the birds be killed after 69 of the same flock at Universal Ostrich Farm in the West Kootenays died from the highly infectious virus.

The CFIA did not accept the farm’s request for an exemption, and Universal Ostrich then turned to the Federal Court to ask for a judicial review of the CFIA’s cull order.
