NEW DELHI — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party was trying to regain power in the federal territory that includes New Delhi on Wednesday as residents voted in a state legislature election. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party hasn’t won the territory that includes India’s capital of 20 million people in over a quarter-century.

Exit polls released on Wednesday indicate a likely victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ) in the Delhi Election 2025, signaling a defeat for the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The elections for the 70-member Delhi Assembly took place in a single phase on February 5, witnessing a voter turnout of approximately 60%.

Axis My India predicted a vote share of 48% for BJP and its allies and a drop in AAP’s vote share from 53.57% in 2020 to 42% this time around.
