Here’s how Michael taught this Great Green Macaw the wave trick. Teaching the wave trick is based off of step up. First, it is important to make sure the parrot is properly trained to step up by itself. Refer to our other videos about basic training and step up training. The wave is taught by pretending you want the parrot to step up but clicking and giving a reward once the foot comes up but before the bird steps up. Use a clicker to click the moment the foot comes up and before it can reach yo

Target training to teach a Buffon’s Macaw some useful skills! Target training is super helpful for teaching parrots to step up, flight recall, turn-around, and much more. For this positive reinforcement training, I use a clicker, target stick, and treats. The click lets him know he did it right and is about to receive a treat. Mr. Macawley can be a bit intimidating at times, and needs more training to be 100% comfortable stepping up on hands and trusting his humans without fear. This T perch is a great tool to allow pet sitters or anyone else familiar with Mr. Macawley to get him from point A to point B without fear of getting bitten. It will also give him some space and hopefully be less scary for him if someone he doesn’t trust needs to move him to/from his cage. This will be our main priority in training (along wit

Step-up hesitation is when parrots that are normally friendly default to avoiding stepping on hands. Even though Rachel is trained and is friendly, she still reverts to this primal hesitancy. Parrots that were mishandled or forced to step-up as a baby are more likely to develop step up hesitation or worse yet bite when presented a hand. Even if later taught to step up willingly, that primacy of avoiding stepping up at a young age may still make them hesitant. For these reasons, it is super impor

🦜 How To Harness Train Your Bird 🦜 Come with me and @landon_andthebirds from @birdtricksofficial as we harness train my blue throated macaw! Although it may look easy, this process took three months of slow, patient work. Now Bumi gets to enjoy fresh air and natural sunlight safely, without the need for wing clipping (because flight matters for both physical and mental health). Parrots can live for decades, so three months is nothing in the long run. I encourage everyone to spend some time tra

Let me show you how to put an aviator harness bird leash on a Great Green Macaw. How do you put a harness on a parrot? This video is about the details of how to put a harness on a macaw. Cucumber the Great Green Macaw demonstrates how he volunteers to wear a harness. This takes training and is very important. If the bird doesn’t volunteer to wear the harness, it will likely be unhappy and trying to chew it off. This Buffon’s Macaw walks over and sticks his head into the harness all by himself. N

How do you know if your parrot wants to step up? If the parrot wants to step up, the parrot will step up. However, the alternative could be rather unpleasant. If you stick your hand directly in front of the parrot and he doesn’t want to step up, he could bite your hand. So, instead, show your hand to the side and try to entice your parrot to step up voluntarily. If he doesn’t want to, the parrot just won’t come. No bites! Use a clicker, target stick, and training perch to teach your parrot to st
