AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Democrats prepared for a final show of resistance against a Republican effort to redraw the state’s congressional maps mid-decade, signaling plans to speak late into Friday night on the Senate floor in an attempt to delay final passage.

Democratic Party leaders from across the country are meeting in Minneapolis as the party reckons with its 2024 losses and faces Republican redistricting. In Texas, Democratic Rep. Lloyd Doggett said he would retire if the new congressional maps stand.

Under the newly drawn maps, Republicans will likely increase the number of seats in Texas from 25 to 30, and Democrats will see their number of seats drop from 13 to eight. Lawmakers from both parties blamed each other for using race.
